Milestones 2018

Through the following ten points we want to underline the most noteworthy projects in road safety, the environment, social action, culture and the transfer of university-company knowledge.

Road Safety

UNICEF, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Guttmann Institute and the Abertis Foundation have kick-started the Rights of Wayproject to reduce accidents involving children in Third World countries. 500 children around the world die every day from road traffic accidents on their way to and from school. It is the main cause of death in school-age children.

The Abertis Foundation has interrupted the night life with the “El Apagón” (The blackout) sensitisation campaign targeting youngsters in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Salamanca and Ibiza. The lights and music in the nightclubs is switched off in the early hours and a video is shown in which a young man in prison warns the youngsters of the consequences of alcohol or drugs when driving.

International UNESCO Centre for the Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves

The Jordanian Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, has presented the Abertis Foundation with an award for promoting the Network of Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves through the International UNESCO Centre. Two Jordanian reserves, Dana and Mujib, have joined the Network.

The International UNESCO Centre strengthened ties with the Biosphere Reserves in the Adriatic and Ionic seas. To do so, the Centre made its debut in Venice (Italy), where it gave the conference titled 'The Network of Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves. Towards a strategic cooperation with the Adriatic region'.

Social Action

We support state-of-the-art scientific research. One of the actions involves collaboration with the Alzheimer Foundation, which studies the ways of preventing the disease.

We help victims of the natural disasters occurring around the world. Our trusted partner used to ensure international aid reaches them is the Red Cross.

Culture

Abertis has continued to promote major exhibitions in the countries in which it operates, especially two by the artist Joan Miró in Argentina and France, one by the painter Pablo Picasso in Italy, and one by Gala Salvador Dalí in Barcelona. They have all exceeded the expectations of their visitors by far.

Abertis Chairs

The International Network of Abertis Chairs – present in Brazil, Chile, Spain, France and Puerto Rico – has received one of the Excellentia Ex Cathedraawards from the University of Valencia.

For the first time, the number of women winning the International Abertis Award in the different countries has exceeded the number of men. 11 women won awards compared with 10 men.
